INTERVENTION BY
COLONEL SHAMSURI NOORDIN
MILITARY ADVISER
PERMANENT MISSION OF MALAYSIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS
AT THE MEETING FOR GROUP OF FRIENDS
FOR PROMOTING ACCOUNTABILITY FOR CRIMES AGAINST PEACEKEEPERS
24 APRIL 2023
Mr. Chair,
Thank you for convening this meeting. This Group of Friends allows us to promote accountability for all acts of violence against United Nations peacekeepers.
At the outset, Malaysia reaffirms its commitment to the importance of peacekeeping operations in maintaining international peace and security. At present, our largest concentration of peacekeepers are serving in South Lebanon under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
Malaysia remains deeply concerned with increased attacks against UN peacekeepers. Despite our collective efforts to stabilise countries in conflict with the deployment of more peacekeepers, we must continue to ensure the safety and security of our peacekeepers. Given the new realities and challenges, the peacekeeping mission must be tweaked continuously to ensure that peacekeepers would be able to implement their mandate effectively.
Malaysia encourages cooperation between all stakeholders on accountability for crimes against peacekeepers in order to drive progress on combating impunity. At the same time, greater efforts at the strategic level are needed to increase the legitimacy of the peacekeeping mission.
To conclude, Malaysia reaffirms its support in strengthening the United Nations peacekeeping operations. We owe it to ourselves and our stakeholders to ensure that peacekeeping remains effective and can adequately respond to evolving and new challenges.
Thank you
