STATEMENT : INAUGURAL MEETING ON THE GROUP OF FRIENDS OF GLOBAL GOVERNANCE

STATEMENT BY

MR. SOFIAN AKMAL ABD KARIM,

DEPUTY PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MALAYSIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS

INAUGURAL MEETING ON THE GROUP OF FRIENDS OF GLOBAL GOVERNANCE

CR 12, 9 DECEMBER 2025

Thank you, Chair,

Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

My delegation is honoured to join this inaugural meeting of the Group of Friends of Global Governance.

Malaysia wishes to commend China for its vision and steadfast commitment to multilateralism, of which this initiative, is a good example.

We welcome the establishment of this Group of Friends as a timely and meaningful platform to strengthen dialogue, enhance cooperation, and support genuine reform of the global governance architecture.

We also take note of the Global Governance Initiative, launched earlier this year, which emphasises sovereign equality, respect for international law, multilateralism, a people-centred approach, and concrete action. These resonate strongly with Malaysia’s core principles.

Malaysia’s support for this initiative has already been conveyed at the highest level. During his working visit to China in September 2025, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim underscored Malaysia’s readiness to work with partners to promote development that brings tangible benefits to all, while upholding the central role of the United Nations.

Looking ahead, Malaysia sees great value in this Group as a platform to deepen cooperation not only with China and the members of this Group of Friends, but with all states. We believe that the Group can make meaningful contributions in many areas, including digital governance, sustainable development, climate action, global health, and capacity-building.

Malaysia stands ready to engage constructively and contribute toward outcomes that reinforce an international system rooted in fairness, equity, and shared prosperity.

We look forward to working closely with all members of this Group of Friends, towards a stronger UN and a more responsive global governance system.

Thank you.
