STATEMENT BY
COL SHAMSURI NOORDIN
MILITARY ADVISER
PERMANENT MISSION OF MALAYSIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS
MEETING ON PEACEKEEPING MINISTERIAL PLEDGE IMPLEMENTATION
UN HEADQUARTERS, 29 JUNE 2022
Mr. Chair,
Thank you for organizing this meeting.
1. I wish to reiterate the announcement of two pledges made by Malaysia at the 2021 Seoul UN Peacekeeping Ministerial hosted by the Republic of Korea on 7 December 2021. First, we pledged that in training and partnership - Malaysia would continue to provide training on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS). Second, we pledged to increase the number of women deployed to the peacekeeping mission.
2. On the first pledge, I am pleased to share that Malaysia is collaborating with Canada through its Directorate of Military Training and Cooperation (DMTC) in offering courses related to WPS at our Malaysian Peacekeeping Centre (MPC). Malaysia remains committed to continuing this collaboration and conducting more WPS courses in the future.
3. On the second pledge, Malaysia is committed to increasing the number of women personnel serving in the MAF to 10 percent in line with the United Nations Security Council’s Resolution 1325 on WPS and to achieving the target set out in the Uniformed Gender Parity Strategy (UGPS).
4. In this connection, MAF is taking various steps to increase the participation of women personnel, as well as individuals from different backgrounds, through proactive recruitment, better career development, and retention of personnel to achieve the objective of the UN and in line with the stated in Malaysia’s Defence White Paper.
5. Malaysia is also committed to deploying Malaysian Police as IPOs and FPU in UN Mission. Currently, we are at Level 1 in PCRS for the deployment of one platoon as FPU. We are ready to prepare for the next level of PCRS.
6. Malaysia once again reaffirms its strong commitment to peacekeeping efforts under the ambit of the United Nations. We will continue working with others to strengthen our shared commitment to international peace and security.
Thank you.
