AGENDA ITEM 125 – COOPERATION BETWEEN THE UNITED NATIONS AND REGIONAL AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS
18 NOVEMBER 2024, NEW YORK
Thank you, President.
Malaysia would also like to thank the Secretary-General for his report titled: “Cooperation between the United Nations and regional and other organizations”. The report contains a comprehensive list of achievements and progress, and at the same time, identified potential areas of cooperation in various sectors, between the UN and regional as well as other organizations.
2. Close cooperation between the UN and regional as well as other organizations is vital for leveraging expertise and resources, promoting comprehensive approaches to addressing complex global challenges, and enhancing efficiency while avoiding overlaps and redundancy.
President,
- The New Agenda for Peace provides a vision for a more peaceful world by fostering international cooperation based on trust, solidarity, and universality. These principles are crucial for addressing the pressing challenges of our time. The Pact for the Future frequently references the importance of close cooperation and partnership between the UN and regional as well as sub-regional organizations in maintaining peace and security, strengthening peacebuilding efforts, and advancing our common vision for a better digital future.
- Building on these principles of collaboration and shared responsibility, Malaysia commends the convening of the ASEAN-UN Summit last month, which underscored the shared commitment to multilateralism in tackling urgent issues such as climate change, regional stability, and sustainable economic growth.
- Malaysia also affirms that the ASEAN Vision 2045, which aims to create a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable ASEAN, aligns with the principles outlined in the Pact for the Future. Both frameworks represent ambitious blueprints for fostering global stability, peace, and sustainability. Malaysia is committed to supporting the implementation of both the ASEAN Vision 2045 and the Pact for the Future, working closely with the UN and regional partners to advance our shared objectives of global stability, peace, and sustainability.
President,
5. During a recent address on Malaysia’s upcoming ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, our Prime Minister reaffirmed ASEAN’s dedication to regional economic resilience, digital transformation, and sustainable growth. These initiatives, which are people-centered and inclusive, align with the SDGs and underscore ASEAN’s commitment to fostering long-term prosperity and well-being for all.
6. The UN has been a vital partner in ASEAN’s progress toward achieving the SDGs, particularly in areas such as climate action, poverty alleviation, and health security. Under Malaysia’s Chairmanship, ASEAN will continue to collaborate with the UN to promote green growth, sustainable infrastructure, and public-private partnerships. Through initiatives such as the ASEAN Digital Integration Framework, ASEAN and the UN are also working together to foster an inclusive digital economy, bridge the digital divide, and drive innovation.
7. ASEAN’s commitment to building a people-centered community is central to its cooperation with the UN. Efforts to protect human rights, enhance social welfare, and build resilient societies are among priorities that guide this partnership. ASEAN remains committed to ensuring that no one is left behind, particularly the most vulnerable.
President,
8. Finally, Malaysia firmly believes that a strong partnership between the UN and regional organizations is essential for global peace, security and prosperity. We reaffirm our commitment to the principles of multilateralism, cooperation, and shared responsibility. The collaboration between the UN and regional bodies such as ASEAN and the OIC, to which Malaysia belongs, amplifies our collective efforts, and enables a unified, effective response to the complex challenges facing our world today.
I thank you.
