STATEMENT : 422ND MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE ON THE EXERCISE OF THE INALIENABLE RIGHTS OF THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE
STATEMENT BY
H.E. MR. AHMAD FAISAL MUHAMAD
PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MALAYSIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS
AT THE 422ND MEETING OF THE
COMMITTEE ON THE EXERCISE OF THE INALIENABLE RIGHTS
OF THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE
3 APRIL 2024, CONFERENCE ROOM 2, UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS
Thank you, Mr. Chair, for giving me the floor. Thank you as well to the briefers for their sobering briefing. We congratulate Mr. Basel Adra on his Oscar for the excellent film that he made.
2. I also wish to extend Malaysia’s heartfelt condolences to Dr. Younis Khatib and the Palestine Red Crescent Society over the barbaric killing of its personnel by Israel on 23 March 2025. I understand that the Security Council will be meeting this afternoon to discuss this unacceptable crime.
Mr. Chair,
3. We are witnessing widescale violations of international law, particularly international humanitarian law, in the occupied Palestinian territory. Israeli occupation forces are killing Palestinian civilians, destroying civilian infrastructure, blocking the entry of humanitarian aid and targeting humanitarian workers despite them clearly identifying themselves. We deplore the resumption and escalation of hostilities in the Gaza Strip since the ceasefire was violated by Israel on 18 March 2025. It is clear that the resumption of the genocide in Gaza is motivated by political survival rather than the purported objective of securing the release of the hostages. The announcement by the Israeli Government that its military will “dissect” Haza in efforts to exercise greater control over Gaza territories is deeply worrying.
4. The situation in the West Bank is also equally concerning. We are deeply alarmed by the joint statement by the Israeli Ministers of Defence and Finance on the Israeli government’s intention to permanently acquire, colonise, and annex the entirety of the occupied West Bank. This is a clear contravention of the international consensus of a two-State solution.
5. It is imperative that Israel be held to account for its grave violations of international law. The forcible acquisition of land must not be normalised under any circumstances, for international law is very clear on its prohibition. It is imperative that we speak out and take action against parties that seek to forcibly displace Palestinians from their homeland. We appreciate that some countries are imposing sanctions on Israeli extremist settlers. However, such sanctions should be applied towards the entire settlement enterprise in order to be an effective deterrent to Israel’s nefarious plans to permanently acquire, colonise, and annex Palestinian land.
Mr. Chair,
6. In conclusion, rest assured that Malaysia will continue to work closely with other members of the Committee and the wider UN membership to advocate for the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination, as well as for the establishment of a sovereign State of Palestine.
Thank you, Mr. Chair.
