STATEMENT (2C) : SIDE EVENT OF THE SECOND COMMITTEE OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY
INTERVENTION BY
MR. CHIN KENVEY
ADVISER/ LONG-TERM DELEGATE
PERMANENT MISSION OF MALAYSIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS
AT THE SIDE EVENT OF THE SECOND COMMITTEE OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY
“NEW PERSPECTIVES ON DEVELOPMENT IN THE 21ST CENTURY”
12 OCTOBER 2023, CONFERENCE ROOM 2, UNHQ
Mr. Chair,
Malaysia wishes to thank you for convening the side event today. I would also like to thank the speakers from both of the panels for sharing their valuable insights on the two important topics today.
Mr. Chair,
- Equitable economic growth has been the primary development agenda for Malaysia. Malaysia strives to achieve a higher level of development while ensuring that every individual feels the positive impact of economic growth and social development. Like many other nations, GDP growth has been the primary indicator of progress over the years. Hence, a deliberate examination of the shift towards beyond GDP is warranted.
- Furthermore, it is vital to establish uniformity across nations in adopting a fresh perspective that encompasses beyond GDP measures. This is crucial for tackling the intricate and interrelated global issues concerning well-being, sustainability and equitable development. Additionally, last June, the Secretary-General in his OCA Policy Brief on Beyond GDP calls for a technical process to develop a new set of metrics to measure what we value.
- Given this context, my delegation would like to hear the panelists’ insights on how international cooperation and role of technology and data can be leveraged to ensure a consistent global approach to moving beyond GDP?
Thank you for your attention.
