STATEMENT : INFORMAL MEETING OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO HEAR A BRIEFING BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY ON HIS PRIORITIES FOR 2025

STATEMENT BY AMBASSADOR DR. AHMAD FAISAL MUHAMAD

PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MALAYSIA

TO THE UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK

AT THE

INFORMAL MEETING OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO HEAR A BRIEFING BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY ON HIS PRIORITIES FOR 2025, GENERAL ASSEMBLY HALL, 14 JANUARY 2025

President,

Malaysia thanks you for briefing the General Assembly on your priorities for the resumed 79th session. Malaysia aligns itself with the statement delivered by Iraq on behalf of the Group of 77 and China.

President,

The theme you have chosen for the general debate of the 79th session, “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations,” remains relevant as we enter the new year. It recognizes the urgent need to put aside narrow political interests in order to focus on agendas that are truly important to us all. It serves as a reminder that the challenges before us are great and that no single country can tackle them alone.  Above all, it is a call to action to strengthen multilateralism with the United Nations at its core.

The General Assembly, as the most representative organ of the United Nations, has the moral authority to lead the transformation of global governance. We must intensify efforts to revitalize the General Assembly—the great assembly of nations—to ensure it effectively addresses emerging threats and implements the priorities you have outlined. Only through a robust multilateral system, anchored by a dynamic General Assembly, can we build the global resilience necessary to tackle crises, accelerate the achievements of the Sustainable Development Goals, and maintain international peace and security in an increasingly complex world.

President,

As the Chair of ASEAN this year, rest assured of Malaysia’s commitment to supporting the work of the General Assembly under your presidency as we collectively strive towards a more peaceful, sustainable, and equitable world, with no one left behind.

I thank you.
