STATEMENT : INFORMAL PLENARY MEETING OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY ON INTERNATIONAL DAY TO COMBAT ISLAMOPHOBIA
STATEMENT BY
MR. SOFIAN AKMAL ABD KARIM
DEPUTY PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MALAYSIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS
AT THE INFORMAL PLENARY MEETING OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY ON INTERNATIONAL DAY TO COMBAT ISLAMOPHOBIA
FRIDAY, 14 MARCH 2025, GENERAL ASSEMBLY HALL, UNHQ
Mr. President,
Thank you for convening this important informal meeting on the occasion of the International Day to Combat Islamophobia. Malaysia aligns itself with the statement delivered by Pakistan on behalf of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
- Islamophobia, in all its forms, continues to be a challenge for societies worldwide. Malaysia remains deeply concerned by the rise of Islamophobia and denounce the repeated hate crimes targeting Muslims around the world, along with all forms of incitement to hatred and the propagation of racism, whether through words or actions.
- Malaysia stands firm in its belief that everyone, regardless of faith, race, or background, has the right to live in dignity, free from hate and fear. We believe that addressing Islamophobia requires a collective, multifaceted approach which includes education, advocacy, interfaith dialogue, and strong legal frameworks to protect the rights of all individuals.
- Malaysia also recognises that Islamophobia is often fueled by misinformation and ignorance. Therefore, we must focus on promoting awareness and fostering understanding about Islam, its teachings, and its values. The media, educators, and policymakers have a significant role to play in breaking down stereotypes and highlighting the positive contributions of Muslim communities to society.
- Malaysia believes that the appointment of the Special Envoy on Islamophobia is essential for providing the leadership required to effectively coordinate and advance international efforts in combating Islamophobia. We strongly urge for a swift resolution regarding the appointment of the Special Envoy.
Mr. President,
- In Malaysia, we are committed to promoting interfaith and intercultural dialogue, in line with the “Madani” or “Civilisational” values of sustainability, compassion, respect, innovation, prosperity and trust. We continuously work to strengthen the social fabric by ensuring that our education system encourages mutual respect and understanding among young people, as they are the future leaders who will shape a more inclusive and tolerant world.
- On this International Day to Combat Islamophobia, Malaysia calls on all Member States to work together to challenge the stereotypes and prejudice that fuel Islamophobia. We must combat this global scourge by fostering a culture of inclusivity, empathy, and respect for one another. Let us reaffirm our commitment to building a world where peace, tolerance, and understanding reign, and where people of all faiths and backgrounds can live together in harmony.
I thank you.
