ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE FUNCTIONING OF THE SECRETARIAT, INCLUDING ITS SEAT

FRIDAY22 AUGUST 2025

1.Thank you, distinguished Co-Chairs, for giving Malaysia the floor. As Malaysia is taking the floor for the first time for this session, we would like to extend our appreciation to the Co-Chairs for providing the revised aid of discussion on the topics for this session and also the document on the overview of proposed elements for arrangements for the functioning of the secretariat.

2.Malaysia notes that the proposed elements are non-exhaustive in nature. As a preliminary observation, Malaysia supports the inclusion of the element of “equitable representation of developing States” in the appointment process of the head of the secretariat and staff selection. On that note, Malaysia wishes to highlight that this element should further consider that developing countries have unique interests, needs and priorities. Therefore, it is essential for the Commission to explore tailored approaches that ensure these developing countries are well represented in the respective appointment and selection processes.

I thank you.
