THEMATIC DEBATE OF THE AD HOC WORKING GROUP
ON THE REVITALIZATION OF THE WORK OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY (AHWG): THE SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT OF THE SECRETARY GENERAL AND OTHER EXECUTIVE HEADS
NEW YORK, 9 FEBRUARY 2023
All protocol observed. Mister and Madam Co- Chairs, congratulations on your reappointment. As in past years, you can count on Malaysia for our support to this process. Special thanks are also given to the UN Office of Human Rights for the briefing. It certainly is helpful to keep abreast with the updated statistic of the geographical diversity and gender parity in the UN system.
2. Malaysia aligns itself with the statement delivered by the the Non- Aligned Movement. Please allow me to underscore a few important points in our national capacity.
i) Firstly, Malaysia reiterates our call for the process of selecting and appointing the UN Secretary General to be transparent and inclusive of all Member States;
ii) Secondly, with respect to resolution 72/313, Malaysia firmly believes that there should be a provisional timeline starting from the process of nomination to selection, as to establish a more organized and systematic process; and finally
iii) The Security Council is highly urged to recommend more than one candidate based on an equal and fair gender and geographical representation, for the consideration of the wider Member States at the General Assembly.
3. Please be rest assured of our delegation’s continued support on the revitalization process.
Thank you.
