SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON THE SITUATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN MYANMAR,

Mr. Chair,
We thank the Special rapporteur for his comprehensive report.
Malaysia remains gravely concerned over the situation in Myanmar, with the continued use of lethal violence against civilians and the deteriorating humanitarian conditions which have been compounded by the COVID-19 situation. Malaysia continues to calls on all parties to exercise the utmost restraint to stop the situation from worsening.
Malaysia reiterates our consistent call for all concerned parties to work together towards a peaceful settlement of this crisis. We will continue to support an inclusive dialogue for political transition in line with ASEAN’s Five Points of Consensus. We continue to urge the Myanmar military to change its course and choose a path towards peaceful solutions. Malaysia also calls for the prompt and unconditional release of political leaders, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, U Win Myint and their associates.
Mr. Chair,
ASEAN has played a central role in ensuring peace and stability in the region of many decades. Since the coup, ASEAN has actively continued to pursue various engagements with the Tatmadaw in the interest of peace, stability and prosperity of the country and the region. Malaysia continues to strongly calls for the expedient implementation of the ASEAN Five Points of Consensus.
We urge that the Special Envoy of the ASEAN be given access to visit Myanmar, as well as access to all parties concerned to start constructive dialogue to seek a peaceful solution in Myanmar. In this regard, it is important that ASEAN’s efforts is supported by the international community, including all concerned parties in Myanmar.
Mr. Chair,
Malaysia is also concerned that the current situation in Myanmar will have adverse impact on the Rohingyas Muslims. Malaysia continues to urge the international community to continue to provide support for the Rohingyas, particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a country directly impacted by the Rakhine State crisis, Malaysia reiterates the call for the safe, voluntary, dignified and sustainable return of displaced Rohingya to their place of origin in Rakhine State.
Mr.Chair,
Malaysia avails itself to work closely with the United Nations Secretary-General and other UN mechanisms, including the UN Security Council towards finding a peaceful solution in relation to the situation in Myanmar.
