INTERVENTION (3C) : INTERACTIVE DIALOGUE WITH SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON THE SITUATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES, 25 OCTOBER 2021

STATEMENT BY

MR. AZRIL BIN ABD AZIZ

DEPUTY PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MALAYSIA

PERMANENT MISSION OF MALAYSIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS

AT THE INTERACTIVE DIALOGUE SESSION WITH

MR. MICHAEL LYNK

SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON THE SITUATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS

IN THE PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES OCCUPIED SINCE 1967

25 OCTOBER 2021

Mr. Chair,

I would like to thank the Special Rapporteur for his report.

Malaysia reaffirms its unwavering support for the Palestinians and their cause. We fully support the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, for an independent State of Palestine through a two-State Solution.

Malaysia urges Israel to stop its flagrant violations of international law, through its inhumane, colonial and apartheid policies. We demand Israel to end the ongoing illegal blockade and siege against Gaza, which has exacerbated the already dire humanitarian situation. We also strongly condemn repeated violations and aggression by Israeli forces and settlers against the Palestinians.

Malaysia reiterates the call for the international community, especially the UN Security Council, to shoulder its responsibilities and to act, as honest brokers to ensure long-term peace, security and stability in the region.

Mr. Chair,

We find it astonishing that some UN member states advocate for human rights, condemn corrupt and abusive regimes, as well as other injustices, while at the same time ignore Israeli atrocities towards the Palestinians and its blatant disregard for international human rights law. The question that I have, how do we pursue accountability and a rights based approach, when the countries that champion such an approach turn a blind eye towards Israeli atrocities.  In this regard, we call for crimes of apartheid against the Palestinian people to end.

Malaysia will continue to actively play its role to pursue all legal, political, and economic channels in pressuring Israel and to find a just, lasting, comprehensive and peaceful settlement to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The international community must spare no effort to ensure the safety, protection, dignity and well-being of the Palestinians.
