THIRD COMMITTEE OF THE 74TH SESSION OF THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY, NEW YORK
Mr. Chair,
1. I wish to thank Ms. Michelle Bachelet, High Commissioner for Human Rights, for her presence and report this morning. The Government of Malaysia welcomes the High Commissioner’s End of Mission Statement and assessment following her recent visit to my country on 4-5 October 2019. We acknowledge the High Commissioner’s observations and will continue to strive towards supporting the human rights agenda.
2. Indeed, the first visit of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to Malaysia and Ms. Bachelet’s first visit as High Commissioner to Southeast Asia symbolizes the importance that my government attaches to the promotion and protection of human rights. During the visit, the High Commissioner had positive interactions with the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister as well as several other Cabinet ministers. We also appreciate her willingness to engage with a broad spectrum of civil society organizations (CSOs) and her visit to an Alternative Learning Centre (ALC) for Rohingya children.
3. The High Commissioner’s visit paves the way for closer cooperation with the UN and her Office in the promotion and protection of human rights and in the realisation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. I would also like to take this opportunity to reiterate my government’s commitment to the human rights and fundamental freedoms of all Malaysians, as protected under our Federal Constitution.
