PERMANENT MISSION OF MALAYSIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS

AT THE MULTISTAKEHOLDER PANEL 2: ADDRESSING HUMAN HEALTH, ANIMAL HEALTH AND WELFARE, AGRIFOOD SYSTEMS, AND PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT TO TACKLE ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE, THROUGH INTEGRATED SURVEILLANCE, CAPACITY-BUILDING, SUSTAINABLE RESOURCES, FINANCING, AND INVESTMENT

OF THE HIGH-LEVEL MEETING ON ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE

26 SEPTEMBER 2024

CONFERENCE ROOM 1, UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK

Thank you, Chair.

Malaysia is actively addressing the escalating issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). We established the National Antimicrobial Resistance Committee (NARC) in 2017 and implemented comprehensive action plans to raise awareness, strengthen surveillance, promote infection prevention and control, and improve antimicrobial use.

However, AMR surveillance remains fragmented, particularly in low-resource settings. We must develop inter-operable data-sharing platforms and enhance cross-border collaboration. Malaysia is proud to have participated in the WHO Global Survey on ESBL-E.coli and is now expanding its surveillance under the TRIuMPH Project.

Capacity-building is another challenge. We recommend strengthening regional capacity-building networks and increasing domestic resource allocation for training and infrastructure development.

Sustainable financing is essential. We advocate for innovative financing mechanisms like antimicrobial taxes and public-private partnerships, along with global investment platforms.

AMR intersects with public health, food security, WASH, and environmental health, emphasising the need for integrated policymaking. Malaysia's One Health approach incorporates AMR into broader frameworks, including the Malaysia National Plan for Health Security and the One Health Joint Plan of Action, to strengthen coordinated responses.

Through these interventions, we can collectively address the threat of AMR, enhance health outcomes, and contribute meaningfully to global efforts in combating this urgent challenge.

Thank you.
