INTERVENTION BY
MR. AZRIL ABD AZIZ, DEPUTY PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MALAYSIA
TO THE UNITED NATIONS IN NEW YORK
AT THE VIRTUAL LAUNCHING YOURHRC.ORG GUIDE
HOSTED BY NORWAY AND UNIVERSAL RIGHTS GROUP
7 OCTOBER 2021, 0900-1000HRS (NY)/ 1500-1600HRS (GENEVA)
Thank you for giving me the floor, Mr. Moderator.
Excellencies, Ladies and gentlemen
Good morning
First of all allow me to thank the Permanent Mission of Norway to the United Nations in New York and the Universal Rights Group for organizing this event.
I would like to begin by stating that this is not the first time Malaysia is vying for a seat at the Human Rights Council. Previous stints at the Council, has allowed Malaysia to learn from other states. The Human Rights Council affords this, as it allows member states to learn from one another as we strive to do better. It also allows others to examine us as we place our own human rights record under scrutiny.
This is in recognition that no state has a perfect human rights record, but states, including Malaysia constantly desire to improve itself. For Malaysia human rights is alive, dynamic and ever evolving. It is a lifetime journey, not a destination. The pursuit for it will never end as we aspire to advance human rights as we progress.
Malaysia is confident that we can work closely with UN member states and all stakeholders towards enhancing constructive engagement to advance the work of the Council and elevate its credibility in the promotion and protection of human rights. We have shared with member states and the public our pledges and commitments. We have engaged in multi-stakeholder dialogues in sharing our vision of our work at the Council. We look forward in continuing such engagement and collaborations when we join the council.
With this, I humbly seek your support to Malaysia’s candidature to the Human Rights Council (HRC) for the term 2022-2024 at the elections on 14 October 2021 in New York. The road ahead for human rights is long and will be full of challenges. We ask you to join us, hand in hand, as we move forward in our work in the promotion and protection of human rights.
I thank you.
