CONFERENCE ROOM 11, UN HEADQUARTERS

Mr. Secretary-General,

Excellencies,

Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

Mr. Chairman,

  1. The protracted conflict and the dire humanitarian situation in Myanmar remain a matter of concern for Malaysia. Securing peace in Myanmar and ending the atrocities against the ethnic minorities of Myanmar are the utmost priorities.

  1. The OIC must continue to uphold its unity and solidarity in addressing the plight of the Rohingya. It is both our moral and legal obligation to collectively advocate for the protection and realisation of their fundamental rights, including effort to ensure accountability for the safe, orderly, dignified and sustainable return and re-settlement of the Rohingyas to their legitimate homeland in Rakhine state of Myanmar;

Mr Chairman,

  1. As ASEAN Chair 2025, Malaysia is committed to a constructive and inclusive approach in addressing the situation in Myanmar, guided by the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus. Malaysia’s focus on this is clear:

  1. Firstly – we proposed a phased approach to reduce and cease targeted violence, in particular the targeting of civilian facilities and infrastructures;
  2. Secondly – we proposed the expansion of humanitarian aid delivery and the opening of additional humanitarian corridors; and
  3. Thirdly – we proposed broader engagement with Myanmar stakeholders to promote conducive environment for an inclusive political dialogue;

  1. Malaysia, through the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair on Myanmar, remains committed in engaging with the many diverse groups of Myanmar stakeholders, in finding a peaceful and durable solution in Myanmar.

Mr Chairman,

  1. Malaysia commends Bangladesh for hosting more than 1.2 million Rohingya refugees in the country and providing them with safety and humanitarian assistance.

  1. In seeking accountability and justice over human rights violations against the Rohingya, Malaysia appreciates the efforts of The Gambia in initiating a case at the International Court of Justice.

  1. Malaysia is positively considering contributing to the OIC Fund for Rohingya to support the case, of which proceedings are scheduled to resume next year. Malaysia calls for OIC Member States to further contribute in support of this effort.

  1. Malaysia also encourages members of this Contact Group, OIC Member States and the stakeholders to work closely in identifying areas of collaboration that complement our shared efforts.

  1. We must act with unity to end the violence, ease the suffering, and support lasting peace in Myanmar for the benefit of the Rohingya Muslims.

I thank you, Mr. Chairman.
