STATEMENT BY
MR. MOHD HAFIZ OTHMAN
MINISTER COUNSELLOR, PERMANENT MISSION OF MALAYSIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS
AT THE THEMATIC DEBATE OF THE AD HOC WORKING GROUP ON THE REVITALIZATION OF THE WORK OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY (AHWG)
ON WORKING METHODS, INCLUDING ON COHERENCE AND COORDINATION AMONG THE SIX MAIN COMMITTEES AND THE ROLE OF THE GENERAL COMMITTEE
NEW YORK, 14 APRIL 2021
Thank you, Co-Chairs.
Allow me to briefly highlight the following points:
First: Malaysia commends the Chairs of all six committees for their determination and practical working methods this session due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In this regard, we call on the Main Committees to continuously review their agendas and working methods in responding to contemporary challenges.
Second: My delegation welcomes the ongoing efforts in addressing gaps, overlap, and duplication in the General Assembly's agenda. In this respect, we call for more regular and closer consultation among the Chairs of the Main Committees to address these conundrums. Malaysia is also of the view that innovative and practical means should be further considered to make the Main Committees' debates more focused and interactive.
Third: On General Committee, my delegation is of the view that the General Committee can play a greater role in the revitalization process, including in the implementation of the adopted provisions and outcomes of the revitalization process. This Committee may also consider ways and means to further improve its working methods to increase its efficiency, effectiveness and transparency in all aspects of the General Assembly's work. My delegation, however, wishes to stress that the General Committee shall not decide any political question as stipulated in Rule 41 of the Rules of Procedures of the General Assembly.
To conclude, please count on my delegation’s support on the revitalization process. Thank you.
