STATEMENT: REPORT OF THE INTERNATIONAL ATOMIC ENERGY AGENCY [ITEM 93], 11 NOVEMBER 2020

ON ITEM 93: REPORT OF THE INTERNATIONAL ATOMIC ENERGY AGENCY

AT THE PLENARY MEETING OF 
THE 75TH SESSION OF THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY

NEW YORK, 11 NOVEMBER 2020

 

Mr. President,

At the outset, Malaysia expresses its appreciation to the Director General of the IAEA, Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, for his annual statement on the 64th report of the IAEA.

2.   Malaysia notes with appreciation the Agency’s activities in various areas highlighted in the report, despite the challenging circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Malaysia reaffirms its continued support of the IAEA’s mandated role to promote safe, secure and peaceful uses of nuclear technology.

3.  Malaysia strongly believes in the balanced and effective implementation of the three pillars of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), namely, nuclear disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. In this regard, Malaysia recognizes the indispensable role of the IAEA in promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and technology.

4.   We also recognize the Agency as the sole competent authority mandated to verify the compliance of States towards safeguards obligations.

5.   Malaysia welcomes the draft resolution A/75/L.9 on the report of the IAEA as it reaffirms the importance of supporting the Agency in its role of development and application of atomic energy for peaceful purposes.

6.   Malaysia is pleased to currently serve on the Board of Governors of the IAEA. Cooperation between Malaysia and the IAEA in various fields has been fruitful and encouraging. We reiterate our commitment to building further cooperation with the IAEA, other States and interested partners towards our mutual goals and interests.

7.   Malaysia hopes that the IAEA will continue to play its important role of facilitating access to the peaceful use of nuclear energy and technology for States while ensuring that the highest level of nuclear safety, security and safeguards are observed.

8.   On this note, Malaysia is pleased to co-sponsor the draft resolution A/74/L.9. Once again, we reiterate our strong support to the Agency and its mandated activities.
