DELEGATE OF THE PERMANENT MISSION OF MALAYSIA

ON ITEM 39: THE SITUATION IN AFGHANISTAN

AT THE PLENARY MEETING OF
THE 75TH SESSION OF THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY

NEW YORK, 10 DECEMBER 2020

Mr. President,

Malaysia is pleased to co-sponsor and support draft resolution A/75/L.45 entitled “The situation in Afghanistan.” In particular, we are pleased to see the insertion of the global ceasefire’s call in PP10. We continue to call on all relevant parties to implement an immediate, permanent and comprehensive ceasefire in Afghanistan without any pre-condition, in line with the Secretary-General’s call for a global ceasefire as supported by the UN Security Council in resolution 2532 (2020) and 2543 (2020) and the statement of support, which was co-initiated by Malaysia, endorsed by 172 UN Member States, non-Member Observer State, and Observer in June this year.

2.       Malaysia reiterates its support for the efforts of the Afghan Government towards the peace and reconciliation process, within the context of respecting the country’s constitution, democracy and the rights of all Afghan people. We reaffirm that an inclusive Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process involving all parts of Afghan society, is the only path towards a sustainable resolution of the conflict.

Thank you.
