STATEMENT: AD HOC WORKING GROUP ON THE REVITALIZATION OF THE WORK OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, 25 FEBRUARY 2021

STATEMENT BY
MR. MOHD HAFIZ OTHMAN
MINISTER COUNSELLOR, PERMANENT MISSION OF MALAYSIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS

AT THE THEMATIC DEBATE OF THE AD HOC WORKING GROUP ON THE REVITALIZATION OF THE WORK OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY (AHWG) – GA ROLE AND AUTHORITY, INCLUDING ON PUBLIC DIPLOMACY AND GLOBAL COMMUNICATIONS

NEW YORK, 25 FEBRUARY 2021

Thank you, Co-Chairs. All protocol observed.

2.   Malaysia wishes to align itself with the statement delivered by Algeria on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement. I will add several points in my national capacity.

Co-Chairs,

3.   The primacy, credibility, and authority of the General Assembly are manifested by its unique capability in bringing together representatives of all UN member states. It is a symbol and practical manifestation of multilateralism - in which all 193 member states meet under equal status. In this context, we, Member States, must continue to do our part to preserve the inclusive, consultative, and democratic nature of this Organ.

4.   Malaysia is convinced that one of the ways to preserve and enhance the role of the General Assembly is by ensuring the implementation of its resolutions, including those related to the revitalisation process. The improvement of the working methods of the General Assembly and its main Committees, and the synergies between them are also pivotal in ensuring the efficiency and effectiveness of the Assembly’s work. At the same time, Malaysia fully recognises the imperative and complementary roles of other principal organs in advancing the three pillars of the UN, within their respective mandates as enshrined in the UN Charter.

Co-Chairs,

5.   Malaysia is pleased with the progress made in efforts aimed at increasing the visibility of the General Assembly, including in promoting public awareness through various outreach and engagement programmes. We note that the PGA himself has been continuously updating and educating the broader audience on the Office’s activities via various social media platforms, and we commend the PGA on his efforts. We also hope that the Department of Global Communications of the Secretariat can further enhance its collaboration with the Office of the PGA in this regard.

6.   To conclude, Malaysia stands ready to engage constructively in the proceedings of this forum with a view to make meaningful progress this year.

Thank you.
