47th ASEAN Day Celebration (2014) Washington, D.C., USA








The 47th ASEAN Day was celebrated in Washington, D.C. on August 14, 2014. This event was organized by the ASEAN Committee in Washington, D.C. There were about 500 guests who attended this auspicious function which was held at the Indonesian Residence.

2.         Among the guests were US Government Officials, ASEAN Ambassadors and Officers, Ambassador and diplomats from other countries namely China, South Korea and Papua New Guinea. Guests from the think tanks as well as professionals were also there. The Guests of Honor were Hon. Scot Marciel, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary (PDAS) of the Department of State and Hon. Arun Kumar, Assistant Secretary of the Department of Commerce.

3.         The celebration began with speeches by Ambassador of Indonesia as the host, Hon. Scot Marciel, representing the US Government and Ambassador of Myanmar in his country's capacity as the Chairman of ASEAN for year 2014.

4.         Meanwhile, the Asean Women's Circle launched the Asean Film Festival on the Asean Day which will take place from Sept 5-7 and 13-14 in Washington, D.C. Eight movies will be screened as per below:-


a. Cambodia – “The Missing Picture”
b. Indonesia – “Sokola Rimba” (The Jungle School)
c. Malaysia – “Bunohan”
d. Myanmar – “Kayan Beauties”
e. Philippines – “Muro-Ami” (Reef Hunters)
f. Singapore – “Ilo Ilo”
g. Thailand – “Monrak Transistor”
h. Vietnam – “Floating Lives”

5.         The guests were entertained with ASEAN Cultural Show and Dances as well as treated with  ASEAN food and delicacies which were prepared by all the ASEAN Countries.


6.         The celebration was very successful, joyous and everybody had a good time enjoying the cultural shows and foods as well as had the opportunity to mingle and get to know each other. The event also was successful in promoting ASEAN in Washington, D.C. and the US.
