1 APRIL 2020 - [COVID-19 ALERT]ADVISORY FOR MALAYSIAN CITIZENS RETURNING TO MALAYSIA

The Government of Malaysia has decreed for all returning travelers to undergo a mandatory quarantine upon arrival in Malaysia at dedicated quarantine centers for a period of 14 days effective 3 April 2020.

Returning travelers will be transported by bus to the quarantine centers, where they will undergo health screenings to be conducted by the Ministry of Health. Those who are found positive for COVID-19 will be taken to hospitals, while those who tested negative will be quarantined for 14 days. Families and friends of returning travelers are advised to refrain from going to the airport to receive their loved ones, as all returning travelers will be sent directly to the quarantine centers.

The location of the quarantine centers where the returning travelers are sent will be determined by the relevant Malaysian authorities upon arrival at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Returning travelers will not be allowed to choose the quarantine center. Travelers arriving at international airports in other states in Malaysia will be taken to quarantine centers to be decided by the respective states. While recognizing that the mandatory quarantine requirement may cause inconvenience to returning travelers, please be assured that it is carried out in the best interest of the travelers’ loved ones and the Malaysian public, to prevent the further spread of COVID-19 from returning travelers.

All travelers are also advised to check directly with their respective airlines or travel agents to obtain the latest information on flight connectivity, since the situation is very fluid. In case of flight changes / cancellations and / or medical emergencies, all travelers are strongly advised to obtain travel and medical insurance for their travel back to Malaysia.

Please take note that at this point in time, there is no plan by the Malaysian Government to repatriate / evacuate Malaysian citizens from the United States. Those who wish to return to Malaysia may do so since borders are still open and commercial flights are still available.

For Malaysian citizens who wish to remain in the United States, please be prepared to stay in the country for an extended period of time, and at your own expense. Please refrain from non-essential movement, avoid large crowds, take all necessary precautions, and adhere to the recommendations / restrictions as set by the federal and local authorities.

For Malaysian citizens in the United States who have not registered or updated their contact information with the Embassy of Malaysia in Washington D.C., please do so via e-mail to consularwdc@kln.gov.my.
