COLLOQUIUM TO INTRODUCE MALAYSIA’S ASEAN CHAIRMANSHIP PRIORITIES FOR 2025

On 25 February 2025, the Embassy of Malaysia in Washington, D.C., hosted a colloquium to introduce Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship Priorities For 2025. The event, held in collaboration with the ASEAN and Indo-Pacific Students Initiatives (AIPSI), @americanuniversity and Malaysia-America Society (MAS), aimed to enhance the awareness and raise the profile for Malaysia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN this year.

Themed “Inclusivity and Sustainability”, Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025 seeks to strengthen ASEAN Centrality, enhance ASEAN intra-trade and investment, and prioritise inclusivity and sustainability in community building efforts.

The event convened U.S. government officials, diplomats, industry experts, academics, and regional stakeholders for an engaging panel discussion. Notable participants included Deputy Assistant Secretary of the U.S. 
@statedept Andrew R. Herrup, Ambassador (Ret.) Piper Campbell, Chair of the Department of Foreign Policy and Global Security at American University, and Ambassador (Ret.) Ted Osius, President and CEO of the U.S.-ASEAN Business Council.

Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Khaeriah Zaehera Abd Kayyum in her opening remarks emphasised the significance of Malaysia’s leadership at a pivotal time for the region. As ASEAN confronts global challenges such as economic volatility and evolving geopolitical dynamics, Malaysia’s stewardship plays a crucial role in promoting regional stability, resilience, and sustainable growth.

The event underscored Malaysia’s steadfast commitment to spearheading initiatives that bolster ASEAN’s collective progress. Through inclusive policies and sustainable practices, the ASEAN-Malaysia Chairmanship 2025 is set to drive forward economic integration, safeguard regional security, and promote sustainable development, ensuring that every member state reaps the benefits of shared growth and innovation.
