PRESS RELEASE ON THE APPOINTMENT OF YB DATO’ SRI DR JAMALUDIN JARJIS AS THE AMBASSADOR OF MALAYSIA TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA ON 4 AUGUST 2009

His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang DiPertuan Agong has granted His consent to the appointment of YB Dato’ Sri Dr Jamaludin Jarjis as the Ambassador of Malaysia to the United States of America with Ministerial rank.

 

YB Dato’ Sri Dr Jamaludin Jarjis, born on 25th May 1951, is a prominent corporate and politician in Malaysia. He first joined the Cabinet as Second Finance Minister on 21st November 2002 and in a minor Cabinet reshuffle in January 2004, Dr Jamaludin was appointed the Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs. In March 2004, he was then appointed as Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, which he held until March 2008.

 

Prior to joining the Cabinet, he was the Chairman of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), the national power utility company and the largest listed company on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE) in terms of market capitalization. He was also the former Chairman of Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and the Chairman of the Parliament Backbenchers Club.

 

Dr Jamaludin has been an “energy man” most of his professional and business life. He was the Executive Vice Chairman of EPE Power Corporation before his appointment as the Chairman of TNB. He started his career as a lecturer at University Technology Malaysia (UTM) in 1974. He left UTM in 1984 and started his own consultancy services, J&A Associates, specializing in electrical power and mechanical engineering.

 

Dr Jamaludin holds a Bachelor of Science (First Class Honours) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Manchester, Institute of Science and Technology (UMNIST), United Kingdom, a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from University of Manitoba, Canada and a PhD in Electrical Engineering (Power System) from the University of McGill, Canada.

 

Dr Jamaludin is a Member of Parliament for the constituency of Rompin, Pahang since 1990 and is an elected member of the UMNO Supreme Council since May 2000 until today.

 

He is married to Dr Kalsom Ismail, a dentist by qualification and they have 4 children.
