23 JUNE 2020 - SCAM ALERT!
The Embassy of Malaysia in Washington D.C. has been receiving inquiries and complaints from individuals/companies in the United States, claiming to be defrauded by scammers allegedly from Malaysia.
The most common cases involved scammers who claimed to be the suppliers or exporters of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as face masks and latex gloves from Malaysia. The scammers will request for payment from the buyers and their orders will only be shipped upon the receipt of full payment. Despite their claims that their companies are based in Malaysia, the scammers involved may be operating from a third country.
As the scammers are very creative and conniving, the Embassy wishes to remind everyone to exercise extra precaution in dealing with virtual businesses. Do not transfer money to anyone unless you are certain that the transaction is legitimate and the company you are dealing with is genuine.
If you believe you are a victim of a scam/fraud:
- Report the matter immediately to your local police or the relevant authorities;
- Report the matter to the Embassy of Malaysia;
- End all communication with the scammer immediately; and
- Do not transfer more money.
For inquiry or further information, you may contact the Embassy via email: mwwashington@kln.gov.my / consularwdc@kln.gov.my or telephone: +1-202-572-9700.
