THE 58th ANNIVERSARY OF THE ASEAN DAY CELEBRATION

On 8 August 2025, the ASEAN Committee in Washington, D.C. (ACW) hosted the 58th Anniversary of the ASEAN Day Celebration at the Royal Thai Embassy. The event was attended by Mr. Jonathan Fritz, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of East Asia and Pacific Affairs, Department of State, as the guest of honour; as well as Ms. Sarah Ellerman, Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Southeast Asia and the Pacific, Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.

The event was preceded by the opening remarks by H.E. Suriya Chindawonge, Ambassador of Thailand to the U.S. in his capacity as the Chair of ACW, followed by the speech by H.E. Tan Sri Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaakob, Ambassador of Malaysia to the U.S., representing Malaysia as the Chair of ASEAN 2025. In his speech H.E. Ambassador Shahrul assured Malaysia’s commitment as the ASEAN Chair to building an ASEAN Community that is stronger, more united, and more connected. Subsequently, PDAS Fritz in his speech emphasised the U.S.’ unwavering commitment to ASEAN and expressed appreciation for its efforts in promoting peace and stability, as well as conflict resolution in the region.
