Birth/Marriage Registration
INSTRUCTIONS FOR REGISTRATION OF MARRIAGE (NON-MUSLIM) AT THE EMBASSY OF MALAYSIA, WASHINGTON D.C.
You MUST register your marriage at the nearest Malaysian Representative Office Abroad in your jurisdiction. You are advised to register your marriage within the first six months or it will be considered as late registration and there will be a penalty fee imposed. You and your spouse are required to come in person to register your marriage. If you are within the jurisdiction of The Embassy of Malaysia in Washington, D.C., you may email in your preferred date to check availability. Please make sure you follow the requirements below;
- Your USA Marriage Certificate, Spouse (Non-Malaysian) Birth Certificate and Passport MUST be notarized/certified true by a Notary Public first;
Then you are required to bring all of these documents during your appointment;
For Applicant (Malaysian):
- Original and two (2) original copies of Malaysian Passport (information page only)
- Original and two (2) original copies of Malaysian National Identity Card
- Original and two (2) original copies of Malaysian Birth Certificate
- Original and two (2) original copies of US Permanent Resident Card/Visa status in the USA
- Registration of Malaysians in USA Form
For Spouse (Foreigner):
- Original and two (2) original copies of spouse original Passport (information page only)
- Original and two (2) notarized original copies of spouse Birth Certificate (please provide all relevant supporting documents if name in Birth Certificate and Passport differs)
- Original and two (2) original copies of US Permanent Resident Card/Visa status in the USA (if applicable)
Other documents required for both:
- Two (2) recent passport size photographs each husband and wife
- Original and two (2) notarized original copies of USA Marriage Certificate
- Wedding photos or invitation wedding card (if available)
- Fees applicable - Fee will be calculated based on your appointment date
- For return postage – USPS Express Mail amounting USD$30.45 (subject to change)
- 1 envelope, 1 label and stamps amounting to US$30.45 (subject to change) available from your local Post Office) – Make sure you complete your name and address on the mailing label. DO NOT stick anything on the envelope.
IMPORTANT
- Instruction by Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara (JPN), Malaysia;
- You and your spouse are required to come in person to register your marriage.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MARRIAGE VALIDATION (MUSLIM) AT THE EMBASSY OF MALAYSIA, WASHINGTON D.C.
Muslim marriages MUST obtain Marriage Validation letter at the nearest Malaysian Representative Office Abroad in your jurisdiction to register with the Department of Islamic Affairs in Malaysia at your earliest convenience.
To obtain Marriage Validation letter, please make sure you follow the requirements below;
- All documents which originate from the USA must first be authenticated** by the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C.;
- Documents from Malaysia (Malaysian Passport and Malaysian Identification Card) must be notarized/certified true by a Notary Public;
Then listed below are the requirements that needs to be mailed in to us once you have the documents authenticated;
- Cover letter of request & contact information
- Two (2) original copies of Islamic Marriage Certificate (must be authenticated**)
- Two (2) original copies of Marriage License issued by local Authorities (must be authenticated**)
- Two (2) notarized original copies copy of valid passport (photo page only) of husband and wife
- Two (2) notarized original copies of Malaysian Identification Card (for Malaysians only)
- One recent passport photograph each of husband and wife
- Fee of USD$5.00 payable to “Embassy of Malaysia” by USPS money order only (available from your local Post Office). Personal checks are NOT accepted.
- For return postage – USPS Express Mail amounting USD$30.45 (subject to change)
- 1 envelope, 1 label and stamps amounting to US$30.45 (subject to change) available from your local Post Office) – Make sure you complete your name and address on the mailing label. DO NOT stick anything on the envelope.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR REGISTRATION OF BIRTH (FATHER IS MALAYSIAN) AT THE EMBASSY OF MALAYSIA, WASHINGTON D.C.
You MUST register your newborn child at the nearest Malaysian Representative Office Abroad in your jurisdiction. You are advised to register the birth of your newborn child within one (1) year or it will be considered a late registration. Please note that both parents and newborn child are required to be present to register the birth of your newborn child. Additionally, please make sure that you have registered your marriage with the Malaysian Government at the nearest Malaysian Representative Office Abroad if you were married abroad in the USA. If you are within the jurisdiction of The Embassy of Malaysia in Washington, D.C., you may email in your preferred date to check availability. To obtain a Birth Certificate (Borang H), please make sure you follow the requirements below;
- Your Child’s USA Birth Certificate MUST be notarized/certified true copy by a Notary Public first;
Then you are required to bring all of these documents during your appointment with the Consular Section;
- Original and two (2) notarized/certified true (original copies) of child’s USA Birth Certificate.
- Original and two (2) original copies of parents Malaysian Identity Card.
- Original and two (2) original copies of parents Birth Certificate.
- Original and two (2) original copies of Malaysian Marriage Certificate.
- Original and two (2) original copies of parents Passport
- Original and two (2) original copies of parents US visa status/Permanent Resident Card
- Fee of USD$8.00 payable to “Embassy of Malaysia” by USPS money order only (available from your local Post Office). Personal checks are NOT accepted.
- Two (2) recently taken passport size photograph of the child (white background)
- For return postage – USPS Express Mail amounting USD$30.45 (subject to change)

IMPORTANT

INSTRUCTIONS FOR REGISTRATION OF BIRTH (ONLY MOTHER IS MALAYSIAN) AT THE EMBASSY OF MALAYSIA, WASHINGTON D.C.
Registration of birth for a child under Section 15(2) for Mother of Child who is Malaysian and Father who is of a foreign national must be done in person at the nearest Malaysian Representative Office Abroad in your jurisdiction. Effective from March 2024, the Embassy can now accept applications for both children below and above the age of one (1) year old. However, all registrations will be forwarded to the National Registration Department in Malaysia (JPN) for further processing and approval which is indefinite. - Processing of birth registration under Perkara 15 can take up to 2 years or more;
