A. Application for a New Malaysian Passport

Applications must be made in person at the Embassy.

Documents required

  1. Passport Application Form (IM.42–Pin.1/97) – download at www.imi.gov.my or obtain from the Embassy.

  2. Malaysian International Passport – original and two (2) copies.

  3. Malaysian Identity Card (MyKad) – original and two (2) copies.

  4. Photographs – three (3) passport-size photos, white background, 4 × 6 cm.

Fee: RM 200 / VND 1,400,000
Processing time: 3–6 months (or longer). Applications are transmitted via Diplomatic Bag to the Immigration Department of Malaysia, Putrajaya.

Important notes

  • Expired passports cannot be extended. A new passport must be issued.

  • During processing, the Embassy is required to retain your original Malaysian passport. Please ensure you maintain valid Vietnamese immigration status and any necessary permits while your passport is held. The Embassy cannot be responsible for any difficulties arising with Vietnamese visa/immigration authorities during this period.

  • Please apply well in advance of any planned travel.

B. Application for an Emergency Certificate (EC)

Applications must be made in person at the Embassy.

1) For Malaysians who lost their passport in Vietnam

Documents required

  1. Police Report issued by the nearest local police station.

  2. Passport Application Form (IM.42–Pin.1/97) and the Malaysian Police Report Form (both available at the Embassy).

  3. Copy of the lost Malaysian passport (if available).

  4. Malaysian Identity Card (MyKad) – original and one (1) copy.

  5. Photographs – two (2) passport-size photos, white background, 4 × 6 cm.

  6. Air ticket booking – direct flight from Hà Nội to Kuala Lumpur (no transit permitted).

Fee: RM 50 / VND 350,000
Processing time: 3 working days

2) For a Malaysian baby born in Vietnam

Documents required

  1. Passport Application Form (IM.42–Pin.1/97), to be completed by the Malaysian father or mother.

  2. Photographs of the baby – two (2), white background, 4 × 6 cm.

  3. Air ticket booking – direct flight from Hà Nội to Kuala Lumpur (no transit permitted).

  4. Birth Certificates – copies of both the Malaysian Birth Certificate (if issued) and the Vietnamese Birth Certificate of the baby.

  5. Parents’ documents – copies of passports and Identity Cards (father and mother).

Fee: RM 50 / VND 350,000
Processing time: 3 working days
